Hendry
California, the most populous state of the United States, located on the Pacific coast of North America is bordered by Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico. The four largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco. California is also the home of and wine producing regions such as Santa Barbara and Northern California's Wine Country.
Hendry is a small estate winery located in the south western Napa Valley. Their 117 acres of vineyards lie on gently sloping terrain between 160 and 290 feet in elevation. Thin stony soils and moderate climate allow the production of a wide range of varictals. Most of this property has belonged to the Hendry family since 1939.
At Henry, they stress the importance of the vineyard and they devote much their time to understanding its variations on small scales. Combinations of soil, climate, varictals and clone are critical and for this reason, they have divided their vineyard into different blocks, each managed separately. To them, every block is a learning experience that teaches them about interactions among these variables, and how they influence fruit compositions and wine quality. Small changes in any of them can have dramatic effects on the wine. There has been vineyard on this property for more than 140 years, and they have been farming here for nearly half that time. As their knowledge grows, their vineyard blocks evolve and they get closer to understanding the full potential of their vineyard.
Hendry blocks 1 and 2 are located on Redwood Creek. They are the coolest part of the Hendry vineyard because of the shadow cast by a high ridge immediately to the west. Additional cooling comes from morning fog and afternoon breezes from San Pablo Bay. Both blocks were planted in 1997. The vines are spaced 7 into 5 and are cordon trained and spur pruned. A 6 foot trellis system supports the canopy. Both blocks are grafted to 10114 root stock. Block 1 has CTP5152 clone grafted to the root stock and block 2 has FPMS 1A clone grafted to the root stock.
