Kalyra

California, the most populous state of the United States, located on the Pacific coast of North America is bordered by Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico. The four largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco. California is also the home of and wine producing regions such as Santa Barbara and Northern California's Wine Country.

In 1997 Mike decided to make some wines from his native Australia under the M. Brown label. In 1989 Mike decided to create his own label Kalyra. The name being a translation from the Australian Aboriginal meaning a wild and pleasant place. The philosophy behind these wines is that good wine should be a direct reflection of the fruit used and that it should highlight the distinct varietal characteristics of the regions it came from. Since 1989 Mike has been the head winemaker for Buttonwood farm winery and continues there whilst still making his wines under his own label.

Whilst with Buttonwood, Mike has been able to venture further afield to find grapes for his own label. With some of the best vineyards in the county to choose from, plus fruit from Monterey, Amador and Madera counties, Mike has created a varied and award winning portfolio of table and dessert wines.

The white wine list includes the following all from the Santa Ynez Valley are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, off dry Gewurztraminer, Semillon and a bright new Pinot Grigio from San Luis Obispo County. In a bold and typically aggressive Aussie winemaking style Kalyra has reintroduced the classic dry style Rose with its Cabernet Franc Rose. The red wine portfolio also reflects an adventurous new world style. With its cooler climate the Santa Ynez Valley is well suited to some classic Italian styles. Nebbiolo and Sangiovese are produced by Kalyra annually and are perfect examples of food compatible wines.

Mike Brown has always been a dedicated fan of Rhone varietals and blends and his twenty plus years experience in the area has seen some clever grape sourcing and resultant fine wines. The dessert wines from Kalyra have attracted a cult like following together with a list of awards and lavish praise from the experts. In the rich tradition of Australian dessert wines the list contains fortified Muscat, Liqueur Muscat, Vintage and Ruby Ports and the now famous Tawny Port.
