The population was 25,619 inhabitants at the 2000 census.According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 32.4 square kilometers. As of the census of 2000, there were 25,619 people, 7,832 households, and 6,461 families residing in the city. The population density was 796.4 per square kilometers.

The town was founded in the mid 19th century and was the center of many thriving agricultural ventures. Many of the crops being grown and cultivated were almonds, grapes, walnuts, and pecans.
