Porterville is a city in Tulare County, California, United States. The population was 39,615 at the 2000 census. It is the third largest city in the Visalia Metropolitan Area, behind Visalia and Tulare. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.4 Square kilometers. As of the census of 2000, there were 39,615 people, 11,884 households, and 9,174 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,091.8 per Square kilometers.
