It was incorporated on May 15th, 1906, after formerly being named North Ontario. This city was originally an irrigation colony established by George and William Chaffey. Upland has two sister cities named Mildura, Victoria, Australia and Caborca, Sonora, Mexico.

As per the census of 2000, there were 68,393 people, 24,551 households, and 17,873 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,746.5 square kilometers.
