CHANEN ENTERS FINAL PHASE AT UNC

Chanen Construction Company, Inc. enters the finanl phase of the $4.2 billion UNC Construction Program for Bond and Non-Bond Projects for the University of North Carolina.

Chanen Construction Company, Inc. has begun work on the final phase of the $4.2 billion UNC Construction Program for Bond and Non-Bond Projects for the University of North Carolina, a 16-campus university.  The University of North Carolina is the country’s first and oldest public university, originally chartered in 1789.  The State of North Carolina’s rich heritage of academic excellence is underscored by their state constitution, which provides that the benefits of the University of North Carolina’s system shall be free to the citizens of the State (as far as practicable).

A Chanen joint venture acted as Program Manager for the Construction Program that involved all 16 UNC campuses throughout the state and involved full-scale program management, as well as staff support.  The bond portion of the Construction Program involved hundreds of individual projects, ranging from new buildings to substantial additions and renovations.  Chanen’s work included detailed program and project management services, as well as implementation of new scheduling and cash flow tracking systems.

The bond program is now more than 80% complete, based on bond proceeds committed.  According to Molly Corbett Broad, President of the 16-campus University of North Carolina since 1997, “The high praise being offered to the University of North Carolina for the careful stewardship of the bond referendum construction programs has been well earned.  The hard work and dedication of Chanen Construction has contributed significantly to this success.”

Chanen is now in its 51st consecutive year of business, with operations in North Carolina, Arizona, Illinois, California and Nevada.  Chanen is a long-time member of the Engineering News Record Top 400 Contractors in the country and is known in Arizona for such notable projects as the Midwestern University medical school campus; Arizona Republic Deer Valley Distribution Facility; Hyatt Regency Phoenix, Arizona Heart Hospital and over 40 years of work at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
