As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 72,585 inhabitants. The area was settled in the 1830s. It was incorporated as a city in 1872.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 46.1 square kilometers. Napa is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times.
