As of the 2000 census, the city population was 44,174 inhabitants. The city boasts a tree-lined downtown shopping area full of restaurants and locally owned shops as well as a growing number of chain stores.

As of the 2000 census there were 44,174 people, 18,639 households, and 7,697 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,600.0 per square kilometers.
